GMOSS (Global MOnitoring for Security and Sustenaibility)
The aim of the GMOSS network of excellence is to integrate Europe’s civil security research so as to acquire and nourish the autonomous knowledge and expertise base Europe needs if it is to develop and maintain an effective capacity for global monitoring using satellite earth observation. The science and technology encompassed within the Network includes:
SFIDE (System for FIre DEtection)
Satellite based system for a real-time detection of wild fire in the Mediterranean area. This system, based on the exploitation of geostationary satellite images (MSG/SEVIRI sensor) is part of the SIGRI (Sistema Integrato per Gestione Rischi Incendi) project.
A real-time application of the SFIDE algorithm is being experimented on the territory of the island of Sardinia. The results are available at the following website.
SHADOZ
In recent years a number of methods have been developed for estimating tropical tropospheric ozone (TTO) from satellites. Several are based on TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) instruments. However, there is not a consistent verification data set from balloon-borne ozonesondes.
A number of stations are operating in the southern hemisphere tropics and subtropics, but with differing frequency and reporting procedures. SHADOZ (Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes) is designed to remedy this data discrepancy, by coordinating launches, supplying additional sondes in some cases, and by providing a central archive location. Data will be collected in a timely manner and will be available through this website to the SHADOZ and TOMS Science Teams, as well as to the scientific community as a whole.
Currently, twelve active sites are participating in SHADOZ. The sites are at Ascension Island; American Samoa; Fiji; Irene, South Africa; Java, Indonesia; Malindi and Nairobi, Kenya; Natal, Brazil; Paramaribo, Surinam; La Réunion, France; San Cristóbal, Galapagos; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
CEASMO (Central-East Africa Satellite Monitoring)
The Remote Sensing station located in Kenya (Malindi) is well equipped to acquire environmental, medium and high resolution satellites images covering the Central-East part of Africa. MODIS, SeaWiFS, AVHRR (on NOAA 14, 15, 17, 18) and SAR sensors are currently acquired.
